Ubuntu is the first usable linux, imho. It has been fixing a whole lot the 10.000 bugs, and I hope they will fix most of the rest.

"Perhaps you could consider radical things like aligning every 2nd or 3rd release with Debian, and therefore share compilers, the desktop kernel and more of the workload."
As I understand it, EVERY release is aligned with Debian. See http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/relationship

I'm curious, KeithCu, are you going to get involved in Ubuntu planning or development? It seems you have opinions that to some extent resonate with readers.

I dont know if you're comments come as suprises to the devs. But if you do have an eye for software usability and accessability, I'm sure such expertise wouldn't go wasted on Ubuntu.

Ouch,

Personally, I'm glad to hear of the clock problem with VMWare considering how it is non-free software. Why would you consciously bastardize your GNU/Linux system with those bits anyway?

P.S. Don't tell me.... I'm not really interested.

I take Ubuntu as free alternative to Windows, SUSE or RehHat.

I am more than satisfied with Ubuntu quality acceleration. Pay for Win, SUSE, RH if you want more.

Anyway this arcticle is very good.

Your words are wise. Too bad if Ubuntu doesn't listen. Maybe I've been unlucky, but the only Ubuntu users I've met won't take anybody's word for it that dogs bark.

I do not discuss for one second whether Ubuntu will go commerical or should be commercial or what that even means. I discuss only the challenges Linux faces and ideas on how to make it better.

I have been vaguely confused over letters and articles such as this one. You have some valid points and it is possible Ubuntu could go commercial at some unknown future time. If it does, so what?

As roughly a five month Linux user and three of those Linux only, I do not see why it matters? I have had over ten distro's on my computer in those few months. There are at least 100 more distro's out there, and if I do not like any of them, making my own is only a few mouse clicks away.

Finally, is there any real reason to question that Ubuntu is not what it claims to be? Seems to me if Mr. Shuttleworth wanted a for profit Linux distro he has the resources to achieve that thought. From what little I have read of him, he doesn't seem to be a person to say one something while hiding the real motive.

As the old burger commercial went, "Where's the beef?"

I've been working with Linux for some years now, and I passed through SUSE and Fedora land, I've been a Slackware user for 1,1/2 years, but NOTHING - and I mean NOTHING - I tried worked as good as Ubuntu. Period. Hardware detection is great, releases are stable, apt-get is way better than urpmi, yum, yast [maybe just smartpm is a better alternative]. I just installed Dapper 2 days ago and it works like a charm. Absolutely no problems at all on my laptop and desktop stations.
Ubuntu is easy to install (dapper took 8,30 minutes to install on a 2,6GHz, 512RAM machine), easy to maintain.
"World domination" or not, Ubuntu made more waves in the last 2 years than any other distro. Just look at Fedora Crap... Look at IT! It's bloated. Same goes for SUSE. The only good parts see in Fedora and SUSE are great hardware support and nice config tools. Other than that, "RPM Hell" should stand by each new Fedora version's number.
If Breezy took 1 minute to boot on my Pentium M laptop, Dapper does the same in under 40 seconds. I say THAT'S an improvement.

I've set up Ubuntu (Hoary and Breezy) on 4 different computers and if I had any problems, they were always related to proprietary stuff (drivers, codecs, etc.). IMO they were nothing compared to problems I've had on the dominant OS (I migrated over a year ago out of frustration, my love for Open Source came later).

Several Beefs with Ubuntu Dapper Beta out the other day (Dapper they claim is ready for the enterprise).
- Clock does not work with VMWare (enterprise needs)
- no 2 NIC LTSP install like k12ltsp!
These are pretty basis, without going into some others that are mostly application based.

Can a dictator make things happen vs where in a democracy things evolve at their own pace, & where some things never get done (or action waits until it is time to react to an emergency)?

Lovely read.
I don't necessarily agree or understand all of what you state, but we all are entitled to ones opinion.

Leaps over bounderies have been made by Ubuntu, and even tho I use it and love it we are not going to make 50% so easily. Or Linux for that matter.

We walk over the mistakes of the past, but there are many we still have not seen in the fog.

The sign that Linux will hit 50% is when stores sell linux with computers.

We are a very large band of ragamuffins that won't see our cities built until we have a basis for it.
